Duplication

DUPLICATION is a participatory digital artwork by artist NA11, exploring how our faces, voices and personal data are captured, copied and manipulated.

Created with people connected to Lancaster, the work begins with a simple filmed portrait. Each participant is recorded looking into the camera, speaking a short sentence and photographed from multiple angles. These images and recordings are transformed into digital portraits, point clouds and fragments of sound that repeat, merge and evolve across a large-scale projected installation.

The artwork responds to research led by Lancaster University through the FACTOR group and the NIGHTINGALE LAB, exploring emerging technologies including facial recognition, synthetic media, voice replication and deepfakes.

DUPLICATION reflects the rapid shift from the physical image to the digital version of ourselves: a version that can be duplicated, altered and recreated with increasing ease. Rather than presenting technology as something purely threatening, the work creates space for curiosity, conversation and reflection.

It asks audiences to consider where our digital identities go, who controls them, and how we might recognise what is real in a world where images and voices can be endlessly reproduced.
