Light Up Lancaster returns to Lancaster this November
Transforming the streets, gardens and historical venues of Lancaster on the first weekend of November is LIGHT UP LANCASTER – a spectacular 2-night festival of light and art by international and local artists – illuminating the city’s heritage buildings, public spaces and community corners.
This free festival offers families the perfect opportunity to take a magical evening stroll through the historic city of Lancaster. See the City Museum, Market Square, The Storey, Maritime Museum and Judges’ Lodgings in sparkling splendour.
For 2019, LIGHT UP LANCASTER commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission and the moment that Neil Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin first set foot on the moon.
This year’s programme will see the artwork Museum of the Moon by Luke Jerram take centre stage. With a diameter of seven metres, the artwork features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the moon’s surface. This magnificent installation will be hosted in the medieval Lancaster Priory Church. A fusion of lunar imagery and moonlight with an enveloping soundscape by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award-winner Dan Jones.
Further highlights of the 2019 edition include Lightscape by top-notch Italian arts company, mammasONica, an immersive multi-layered experience, creating a brilliant ephemeral landscape throughout the captivating setting of Lancaster Castle.
Families will also be able to drop into the Lancaster University Family Zone across the weekend. With workshops, exhibits and interactive experiences, witness some of the world-changing research taking place at the University.
LIGHT UP LANCASTER will culminate with a superb festival finale on Saturday when fireworks are launched from the grounds of Lancaster Castle. Free wristbands for the firework official areas at Giant Axe and Quay Meadow are available to order from late September from the festival website.
Light Up Lancaster artworks can be seen from 5.30pm – 10pm on Friday 1 November and 5:30pm – 7.30pm on Saturday 2 November. Lancaster Fireworks Display will be at 8pm on the Saturday 2nd November (Last admission into official viewing areas is 7.30pm).
Now in its seventh year, Light Up Lancaster is delivered by Lancaster City Council, Lancaster BID and Lancaster Arts City. The festival is kindly sponsored by Lancaster University, The Duchy of Lancaster, Aparto, Printing.com – Lancaster, The Areti Charitable Trust, Lancaster Judges’ Lodgings Museum Trust, Lancaster Priory Church and supported by The Dukes and Pennine Events.
